Face shapes: oval, round, square, heart and more

Face shape is a styling convention for choosing haircuts, glasses and beard lengths. Pick a shape for the full guide, or scan to see which one LookFlex measures on your face.

How LookFlex tells them apart

Four ratios, all measured from landmarks on your device. Each shape has a reference profile, and your face gets a probability for each of the seven.

Reference ratios for each face shape
ShapeFace length ÷ face widthForehead ÷ cheekbone widthJaw ÷ cheekbone widthChin width ÷ jaw width
Oval1.210.840.900.50
Round1.130.850.910.52
Square1.160.860.930.53
Rectangle1.270.850.910.51
Heart1.200.880.880.47
Diamond1.220.810.880.48
Triangle1.180.800.930.53

The profiles sit close together on purpose. Real faces vary by only a few hundredths on these ratios, so LookFlex reports probabilities, a confidence value and blends such as Oval–Round, instead of a hard label. For the measurements behind them, see face length-to-width, jaw width and the full methodology.

Find your shape at home

Every guide above has a mirror test and a tape-measure test. The short version:

  1. Pull your hair back and relax your face.
  2. Find your widest point: forehead, cheekbones or jaw.
  3. Compare your face length with that width. Clearly longer points to oval or rectangle, similar points to round or square.
  4. Look at the jaw. Soft and curved points to oval, round or heart, angular points to square, rectangle or triangle.

If you land between two, read both guides. Many people do.

Questions about face shapes

How many face shapes are there?

LookFlex uses seven: oval, round, square, rectangle, heart, diamond and triangle. Other guides use four, five or six. The seven here are the ones the app can tell apart from four measured ratios.

How does LookFlex decide my face shape?

It measures four ratios from 478 landmarks found on your device: length to width, forehead to cheekbones, jaw to cheekbones and chin to jaw. It compares them with a profile for each shape and reports a probability for all seven, plus a blend such as Oval–Round when two are close.

Can my face shape change?

We found no reliable evidence that habits change adult bone structure. Teenagers' faces are still developing, and weight change, ageing and a new haircut can change how your face reads. Face shape results from a single photo also vary with angle and expression, so scan under similar conditions to compare.

Do I have to follow the hairstyle and glasses suggestions?

No. They are styling conventions, not research findings, and personal taste matters more. Any style can be worn by anyone.

Is one face shape more attractive than another?

No. Attractiveness research has looked at cues such as averageness, symmetry and skin rather than named outline shapes, and personal taste counts for a lot. LookFlex does not rank face shapes.
